The first round has finally finished up at Oakmont Country Club in The 2016 U.S. Open. Maintenance crews hurried out on the course behind finishing groupings on holes 8, 9, 17, and 18 to reset pin positions and cut greens for the second time today for the afternoon 2nd round as all groupings from Thursday afternoon will now play round their Friday 2nd rounds. The morning groupings from Thursday who have only completed one round of golf will not return to the golf course until Saturday morning at 7am for their second round.
By Saturday at 3pm the 3rd round of the Open should be played with cut lines determined by 2:30 pm finish of all second round scores. Today’s players which represent half the field will play 36 holes by this evening. They are at a slight disadvantage with greens being cut and rolled before their second round of the day in warm conditions resulting in firmer and faster surfaces. The heat has come up at Oakmont and with lots of water in the ground it’s a lot like a sauna out there for players who after a very short break are out for another 18. A strange U.S. Open this is.
The early leaders from the morning groups on Thursday including Andrew Landry at -4, Lee Westwood at -3, Lowry at -2 and Scheffler the lowest amateur at -1 will not play until 7am Saturday morning . The rest of the remaining top 11 players who are under par are on the course facing very challenging conditions. Look for the early Thursday field to be on the leaderboard going into tomorrow with their second round with distinct advantages, not something the USGA wanted to create.
After the cut line Saturday afternoon the USGA will do its best to get all players finished up by day’s end for a normal Father’s Day finish.
