Starting this year, the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans is getting a new team format that is sure to bring in some of the worlds best golfers.
Team format is something everyone can love, from the golfers to the fans. It’s different, it’s fun and gives us a different aspect of the game.
Rounds 1 and 3 will be alternate shot were the two-man team will play alternating shots. In rounds 2 and 4 the teams will play best ball. Maybe the popularity and ratings of the Ryder Cup has something to do with this change.
The tournament date of April 27-30th isn’t in the near future but with a couple intriguing teams already committing, it is definitely something to get excited about. The field will consist of 160 golfers making up 80 teams. The low 35 teams will be cut after the 2nd round.
The early commits are the reason for the hype behind this tournament that lands just before The Players Championship. This
week the super teams of Rickie Fowler and World No. 1 Jason Day have committed to play together. Also Henrik Stenson and Olympic Gold Medalist Justin Rose are the other powerhouse team. With these two teams committing it is hard to believe other super teams aren’t going to come out of the woodworks in the coming months. Maybe a Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas pairing? We all know they love to golf together and since Fowler has already found a teammate, why not try to beat their best friend? A team of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods? Might be a long shot but worth dreaming about. Maybe a European team like we saw at Hazeltine of Rory Mcilroy and Thomas Pieters. The possibilities are endless that is what makes this format so interesting.WHAT'S YOUR REACTION?
